At the start of great behaviour consultation work, consultants commonly ask owners to partake in simple foundation training challenges. Let’s face it, way too much time and brain capacity can be spent teaching owners very simple things such as whistle conditioning or collar grab conditioning. These simple and easy behaviours prevent practitioners working on more advanced and useful behaviour concepts and can create bottle necks in the consultation process.

When we started to add pre-consult owner-led training into our behaviour mod work we saw huge changes both in terms of the commitment from owners but also the amount of work that could be done in a session.

Think about it, when you turn up to a case and the muzzle has already been conditioned or the dog has already learnt a strong platform behaviour - just how much more expert level value can you add in your time with the owner? How much faster can you flow through a case?

Having these foundation behaviours pre trained saves time on the day and allows for the consultant to get stuck in to any heavier assessments and modification work quickly. It also allows practitioners to be able to start working with a dog prior to the physical date of consultation and, importantly, get a great assessment of the the owners skill level and time commitment to the case effectively.
